FMCSA Removed 7,000+ CDL Schools From Its Registry — Here's How to Verify Yours Is Legit

If you're shopping for a CDL school in 2026, there's a federal purge happening that you need to know about before you hand anyone money.

What's happening

Every legitimate CDL school must be listed on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR) — that's where your training record gets filed so the state will let you take the skills test. Since late 2025, the FMCSA has been auditing that registry hard:

• ~3,000 providers removed in November 2025 for failing to submit required self-certifications.
• ~1,500 in-person audits launched in December 2025.
• ~3,800 more providers removed by January 2026 after thousands of noncompliance notices.

The prime targets: so-called CDL mills — operations promising a license in 2–7 days, skipping required behind-the-wheel hours, or falsifying training records outright.

Why this matters to you

If your school isn't on the registry — or gets kicked off — your training record doesn't count and you can't take the CDL test. Students at removed schools have lost their tuition and had to start over. A cheap fast program that gets purged is the most expensive option on the market.
